Meet our team!
Kishal Tatlay (she/her)UVSP CoordinatorKishal (she/her) is in her final year of her undergrad, studying English and Gender Studies. She grew up in Hatzic, BC, which is Stó:lõ land, and is of mixed Punjabi and German ancestry. She loves frogs (maybe you've met Gregor... iykyk), chili chocolate, and soul music, among so many other things
Kishal is likely a familiar face to those who have spent time in the SUB. Maybe you recognize her as an employee at SUBtext, or from her work with UVSS Food Bank, or as the Events Rep for the Students of Colour Collective... or from one of the many other communities she's involved with! Sustainability—in all senses of the word—has always been really important to Kishal and it is something that she has prioritized in every space she has been in. Acknowledging the interconnectedness of all things and understanding that systems of oppression are not sustainable is a major focus in her work. Sustainability is not just about environmental issues, because environmental issues are not separate from other struggles that we face. Kishal considers taking care of her community to be her most important role in life and she plans to continue this in her new position with the UVSP. Community really is the answer to everything! de Outside of the UVSP office, you might find Kishal hosting an epic gathering, re-watching Star Wars and Star Trek for the millionth time, writing letters, reading Octavia Butler, playing basketball, collecting flowers, or working on her huge collection of playlists (296 and counting!). |
A-C Barrios-Stewart (They/Them)UVSP Communications OfficerA-C is in their (hopefully) final year of undergrad, finishing a double major in Geography and Environmental Studies with a minor in Digital Media in the arts. They grew up on Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam territories, in so-called "East Vancouver." They are Guatemalan on their mother's side and have Scottish ancestry on their father's side. They love a good cup of coffee, listening to folktales, think bats are the cutest, and love looking at cool creatures in tidepools! y
You might recognize A-C as a Community Cabbage member, the old SOGS merch designer, BC Casa member (a local Guatemalan solidarity group) or from last year's UVSP's environmental roundtable! The goals of UVSP of reconceptualizing sustainability align deeply with A-C's values. A-C has been involved in different activist movements for over two decades, growing up with the understanding that environmental justice and human rights are intrinsically intertwined, and the importance of local to international solidarity. A-C's passion for sustainability lies within community and relationships, human and otherwise. ( Outside of UVSP, you probably will see A-C doodling, removing english ivy, working on social media for one of the many grassroots groups they're a part of, listening to true crime podcasts, admiring crows, playing Dungeons and Dragons, taking pictures of friends, reading work by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, or hanging out with their cats! They are super excited to be working at UVSP! Feel free to send them a message at [email protected] if you have any questions about the lending library or about our newsletter 5 |
AVA (she/her)UVSP Events and Programs AssistantAva (she/her) is a second-year Political Science student from Abbotsford, B.C., which lies on the traditional territories of the Sema:th and Mathxwi First Nations. While she is new to UVSP, Ava has experience with various student-focused environmental initiatives in Metro Vancouver and is so excited to join the UVSP team at UVIC!As a political science student, Ava believes in the critical role of social and political dynamics in climate action, as well as the importance of intersectionality within environmentalism. Climate change is a social justice issue as much as it is an ecological crisis, and must be addressed as such.Outside of the UVSP, you'll find Ava painting pottery, taking yoga and dance classes, or singing around the house (much to the annoyance of her roommates).

Sophie (she/her)UVSP Community Engagement AssistantSophie (she/her) is in her third year of Geography and Environmental Studies. She grew up in Langley, BC, which is the traditional territories of the Kwantlen, Katzie, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo First Nations.
She loves a good bowl of oatmeal, coral, and any fish paraphernalia. She feels passionately about the work that the UVSP does and has been a board member for the last two and a half years!
